Rare Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT Sold for 49.99 ETH

Bored Ape Yacht Club isn’t monkeying around when it comes to NFTs.

On June 1, a rare Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT sold on OpenSea for 49.99 ETH, or $128k at the time of purchase. This marks the highest sale yet for a BAYC NFT, putting it in a price range typically reserved in the NFT collectible space for Larva Labs’ CryptoPunks and Meebits.

The Bored Ape in question, Ape #8023, is the only one out of 10,000 programmatically generated apes to simultaneously have the matching traits of “Trippy Fur” and “Trippy Captain’s Hat.”

The Bored Ape Yacht Club project launched in April and consists of NFTs programmatically generated from over 170 different traits including fur color, shirt, and headwear. The apes were initially sold for 0.08 ETH each. Ownership of an ape grants collectors access to “The Bathroom” ̶̶ a special page on the BAYC website wherein users can participate in a collaborative art project, painting pixels on the digital “bathroom wall.”

Currently, the lowest-priced Bored Ape on OpenSea is on auction for 0.79 ETH. The reserve price has not been met.

BAYC gained traction at the beginning of May due to a combination of the unique art, low minting prices, and Twitter hype from influential figures in the space like 3LAU, who temporarily changed his profile picture to a Bored Ape.
